Maidens marching for change!
It was an absolute privilege to stand alongside the inspirational and brave kids at the Youth Climate Strike in Los Angeles. Throughout our worldwide tour on Maiden, we have been devastated to see the effects of poor stewardship on our oceans— going weeks offshore without seeing other boats, but seeing pieces of plastic floating on the surface... even catching many on our fishing line. It’s fantastic to see people fighting for our planet, for our future, and becoming more conscious of the effects of their actions on the environment.

Yesterday I went to my first ever protest. After sailing through so much rubbish of all sorts in the world's oceans, it’s time for us to change our disposable habits. You can’t ignore how we are trashing our planet. Whenever I have borrowed or delivered a boat, I always leave it in a better condition than I got it; we need to treat our big blue planet the same. My favourite sign of the day is ‘there is no plan et B'.
This year I will be sailing on dodgeball ocean crusaders in the Rolex to Sydney to Hobart. I can’t wait to be part of this amazing team who work so hard getting rubbish out of our waterways - we can all do our bit.

The climate strike was a great opportunity for us to connect with a community. So often when we are offshore we feel out of touch with current events, only hearing about them sometimes weeks after they happen. The climate crisis is different. We see many if the earth’s changes firsthand. We spent the afternoon with Los Angeles locals, including some school aged kids. One of the most moving signs for me read “why should we go to school if you won’t listen to the educated.”

I want to support this climatic revolution as I feel everyone must take action as individuals and as a uniform collective group. We don't have to wait to see more harmful consequences, as it is happening now and it's affecting the health of the planet and the human race. Crossing the oceans through different latitudes is the most amazing thing; unfortunately, we have also been through places that broke our hearts by the large amount of plastics, fishing lines and microplastics floating… and that is what we have seen at the surface so imagine what is below the water! We must work together to preserve the planet as we know and gain a better quality of life for the future generations.
