I felt it was a great privilege (to skipper Maiden)... It was awesome to see the delight in people's eyes when they saw Maiden after all these years. Speaking at schools and events about Maiden's work was a huge part of the role which I loved. It still astounds me that 130 million girls do not have access to education, it is beyond belief that this is still happening in the world. My best memories? Sailing into Hawaii- through the cut in the reef with surfers just to our starboard, some kids were out in dinghies and thinking we are going to pick up a wave any minute and take off so I hope they don’t get to close. It was lovely sailing from NZ across the equator then the arrival was cool and the departure was so emotional. Being escorted out of Sydney by a police boat and was there a helicopter? Arriving into NZ , well the official one with the girls singing and us singing back to them. That was so hard, as so many to choose from!
